Maaijke, a young Dutch woman, born in 1815 in Spakenburg, vividly imagines herself into other places and times, but when her concentration lapses, she is back home. On one of her travels, she falls in love with Peter, a U.S. Navy pilot and Vietnam veteran. After an intense but brief affair, her focus flags and Peter, unaware of her abilities and why she disappeared, mourns her absence.
Five years later, Peter finds Maaijke again, and as before, she disappears. Peter, twice devastated by her vanishing, gradually buries his pain over several years, aided by his immersion in his surgical career, and by Celia with whom he falls in love. His career prospers. His happy marriage to Celia is enriched by three children.
He later discovers an old letter from Maaijke claiming he is the father of her sons, whose names match those of his great-grandfather and great-granduncle. He feels further threatened by genealogic data that suggests Maaijke has the same name as his great-great-grandmother, and by genetic analysis of hair samples suggesting he is distantly related to Maaijke. He ponders the implications of what is impossible: to be one’s own ancestor. Meanwhile, his wife, Celia tries to unravel what seems to be a hoax.
In a third and final encounter with Maaijke, Peter has Celia at his side. As the two women pull Peter in opposite directions, the conflicts between the two women, between fantasy and reality, and between living and dying unroll in profound ways.
The author’s early schooling was in Michigan, after which he graduated from Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon) as a chemical engineer. Switching career direction, he entered the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and after residency at the Massachussetts General Hospital in Boston, and two years in the Navy, he practiced and taught cardiac and thoracic surgery at the University of Massachusetts Medical School where his writing was focused on surgical topics. The published works include four books, chapters in 12 other books, and over 100 scientific, peer-reviewed papers. It wasn’t until after retiring that he began to write Maaijke.
Many of Peter’s interests in the novel are shared by Vander Salm, including piloting a plane, sailing, fishing, and bird hunting, the latter in the company of a Labrador Retriever who shares an 1820’s home in coastal New England with the author and his wife.
Maaijke, a young Dutch woman, born in 1815, vividly imagines herself into other places and times —leading her to fall in love with Peter, a U.S. Navy pilot and Vietnam veteran. Their romance entangles them on two continents as their impossible fates converge, diverge, and reconverge.
What a clever and imaginative story. Lusty, transportive- why couldn’t it be true? It’s actually a great piece to re-work as a screen play, I can see it visually and I don’t think there are enough time-travel stories out in the world.
Joanna Baxter Review from OnLineBookClubI found it to be so intriguing and marveled at the writer’s imagination. I would never have been able to keep the time travel straight.
Sarah Ribeiro Review from OnLineBookClubI absolutely LOVED the book. I finished it at 1:30am this morning! Very compelling and heartfelt.
Holly Whitin Review from OnLineBookClubIt’s a great story and I like the way it was told. The characters are well developed and I found myself hoping for a good outcome for the heroine…in spite of her supernatural abilities I believed in her!
J. Crespo Review from OnLineBookClubMaaijke, who was born in a Dutch village in the early 1800s, led a modest and unremarkable life. Being the youngest of all the siblings, her only companion was her vivid imagination, and harnessing that gift enabled her to travel to many places. She remained invisible to the others while she traveled through place and time. When she turned sixteen, she was compelled to marry Bertus Maasen, a man in his forties. Heartbroken and disappointed by her husband’s lack of interest in intimacy, she started traveling through time again, this time choosing to go to Spakenburg in the year 1971. Suddenly, everything about her travel changed, and she could interact with the people there. It was then that she met Peter Massen. Astounded by their identical surnames, she lied about her true identity. The connection between them, however, was instantaneous, and they fell in love. Will their love survive their unique circumstances? Will Peter find out her true identity? Why do they have the same surname? Read Maaijke by Thomas J. Vander Salm to find out the fate of this odd couple.
This book is a page-turner. The dual first-person POV style drives the plot forward smoothly as we get to know both Maaijke and Peter’s lives. Throughout the narrative, the author shows the contrast in lifestyle between the 1800s and 1900s. The mention of several important historical events and milestones adds authenticity to the story. Peter is a likeable character. His insecurities stem from always being compared to his great-grandfather Pieter, who moved to the United States from Spakenburg in the mid-nineteenth century. Despite that, his determination to prove himself worthy is admirable. Maaijke, on the other hand, is a passionate and resilient woman. She is both curious and stubborn. Other characters also contribute to the development of the plot. Strong, relatable, diverse, and intriguing characters are the strongest aspects of this book.
This book touches on the themes of unconditional love, resilience, family bonding, and grief with a tinge of fantasy. The romance between Maaijke and Peter is the backbone of this story. But the unbreakable bonds between family members also play an important role. Every chapter is marked with the years and POV person’s names, making it possible to keep track of the timelines. Several interesting twists keep readers invested. The brisk writing style and attention to detail make the book an enjoyable read.
There is nothing I dislike about this book. Although I noted a few minor errors, they didn’t hamper my reading experience. I must gladly admit that the final chapters kept me guessing the climax till the very end. For its eloquent writing style, brisk pacing, relatable characters, and surprising twists, I rate this book 5 out of 5.
I would recommend this book to older teenagers and adults, as a certain level of maturity is required to fully grasp the concept of the book. This book will appeal to both romance and fantasy lovers.

About Me
This fantastical story has sustained me through a streamer of a cold... Vander Salm is a magical storyteller and a good writer. I am having fun guessing where the story line is going...and beginning to wonder if Wyoming Peter the doctor, whose father always compared him to his all-powerful great-grandfather Pieter, might also turn out to be that Pieter's father... It's such a fun read I don't want to race through it but instead to savor it! Am now ripping along, on Chapter 44. This novel is riveting indeed. I am a sucker for history, time-travel and true love. The author aces all these categories
